Photography

Photography, derived from the greek word meaning "light", is a method of recording images by the action of light, or related radiation, on a sensitive material. The first form of a camera, a pinhole camera, was created in the middle ages by Alhazen. When looking through the camera images appeare upside down. Finally Joseph Nicephore Niepce took the first photographic image. The images today are called heliographs, or sun prints, which allow the light to draw the picture. Louis Jacques-Mandé Daguerre was the first to minamize the exposure time to less than a half hour (previously it had taken 8) and he found a way to keep the image from dissapearing afterwards.

Nicéphore Niépce
Nicéphore Niépce

  • 1787 Daguerre was born near Paris, France on November 18.
  • 1820s-Daguerre began searching for a way to capture the images he saw in his camera obscura
  • 1829-Daguerre formed a partnership with Nicéphore Niépce
  • 1833-Nicéphore Niépce died
  • 1838-Daguerre felt comfortable displaying the results of his experiments to interested inventors
  • 1839-August 19.The process of a photograph and the discovery of a daguerreotype is explained
  • 1839-Daguerre sold the rights to the daguerreotype to the French government
  • 1839-March 9. Daguerre's labratory burned to the ground, with it all of the written records and experiments
  • 1851-July 10. Daguerre died of heart failure in Bry-sur-Marne, France.
The Daguerreotype

A photograph taken by an early photographic process employing an iodine-sensitized silvered plate and mercury vapor.
The photography model forms a negative image which is then exposed on a silver mirror polished with iodine. Once the image appeares, it is covered with silver chloride to preserve it.
  • Daguerreotypes are normally a reversed.
  • The only way to get a correct orientation was to copy the image with a second daguerreotype, or to make the original daguerreotype using a reversing prism or mirror.
  • Each daguerreotype was a unique, one-of-a-kind object
  • Photography's almost magical ability to reproduce life elicited fear and suspicion from many people.

Photography Today
Most photographs today are images printed from transparent negatives onto paper. Photography much simpiler now. It is easy for anyone to pick up a camera and take a photograph. This process no longer requires a full lab to make just one image at a time.
